We act accordingly to the systems we are trained in.

We often forget that the skills we bring to any fight is situation specific and that we can´t directly transfer skills, learned in a specific setting, to different environments unless we trained said skills in that specific environment.
Cooking skills at home are completely different than the skills needed in a busy high paced professional restaurant setting.
Delivering your presentation in front of your spouse is not the same as presenting it in front
of the partners in the firm.

Breathing skills trained in a meditation, or breath work class for example, cannot be directly transferred to real life scenarios by default.
If we can control and use our breathing to inflict changes in our nervous system when we lay on a yoga mat, listening to relaxing music, or while being guided by a skilled instructor, it is not a skill that is easily transferable to our everyday life unless we have the intention to practice the application.
Breathing is not just a matter of inhalation and exhalation. Its a muscular event that must be driven by correct activation and control.
Here is a sequence that I often use with clients:
Are your primary breathing muscles active ?
Are you using both your inspiratory and expiratory muscles ?
Do you know how to control your blood gas regulation ?
Do you hyperventilate witch again will activate your hormonal stress response ?
Can you control your breathing in different scenarios ?
Do you have sufficient resources to fuel your breathing ?
Since our awareness of self.
Our ability to regulate responses to our external environment, and our empathy is heavily influenced by how well we breathe, it is not only important for our health, but for our relationships and careers too.
Don´t just bring a knife to a gun fight. Make sure you know how to develop your skills and put in the work so you can apply them accordingly.
