Cold showers. Are they any good ?
Many people that i talk to, tell me about their cold morning shower rutine.
They often say that they feel more energetic after the cold morning shower. That they feel more focused.
Well no wonder. when adrenaline are being released into the blood stream, it help prepare us for a stressful situation. A survival scenario.
But it has become almost a universal truth, particularly amongst high performers and biohackers, that anything that raises stress hormones, like shock, food deprivation, or sugar abstinence, is a good thing.
That the more we suffer the better for our health.
Getting a adrenaline boost can feel good, and make you feel sharper and more alert, it does however little for your overall health.
A randomised controlled study looked at the effects of cold showers and number of illness days, and found no significant difference between the 30, 60, and 90 second cold showers and the control group. Productivity at work did not differ as well between the groups, suggesting that a cold shower does not change much in regards to health, or overall productivity.
If you like your cold morning shower, go ahead and raise your adrenaline. But you might just as well take a nice hot one, if you do it for health reasons.
